Media Statement by the President of the Chamber of Mines, Mr Sipho Nkosi, on the appointment of a successor to Mr Mzolisi Diliza, Chief Executive of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa
It is my pleasure to announce that the Executive Council of the Chamber of Mines has agreed to the appointment of Bhekokuhle “Bheki” Sibiya as Chief Executive-Designate of the Chamber of Mines.
Mr Sibiya, who is a well known and highly respected member of the South African business community, will start work at the Chamber on 5 July 2010.
It is intended that the Chamber’s existing Chief Executive Mzolisi Diliza, who has occupied the position since 1998, will remain with the organisation for the next six months during which he will assist Mr Sibiya in becoming acquainted with all aspects of what is a demanding position in our country’s business arena. On 1 January 2011, Mr Sibiya will officially succeed Mr Diliza bringing to an end the transitional period and effecting what members of the Chamber’s Executive Council believe will be a seamless and efficient succession that will serve the best interests of the industry that the Chamber represents.
Mr Diliza was scheduled to retire from the Chamber at the end of June 2010 but in consultation with the Executive Council, has agreed to stay in the job until December to manage the agreed period of induction and transition.
On behalf of the Chamber and all its members I extend sincere thanks to Mzolisi Diliza for the exceptional work that he has done during his tenure at the helm of the Chamber. He made history by becoming the first black person to be appointed Chief Executive and the excellent service that he has delivered in leading the lobbying and advocacy activities of the Chamber has been accompanied by a well structured programme to transform the organization so that it appropriately meets South Africa’s employment equity benchmarks. His successful achievements in this critically important area of executive responsibility have been accomplished in a manner that has not disrupted the unique operational and intellectual chemistry that for so many years has been a primary quality in the Chamber’s employee structure.
The Chamber’s Executive Council and I are confident that Mzolisi Diliza’s distinguished record of achievements will be maintained and further advanced by Bheki Sibiya who comes to the Chamber from the University of the Witwatersrand’s Graduate School of Business. Mr Sibiya is the Chairman of Brait South Africa Limited and between January 2004 and December 2005 was Chief Executive Officer of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA). He is an individual whose executive experience extends into both the private and public sectors. During his career he has occupied senior positions at Transnet, Tongaat-Hulett Sugar and South African Breweries. In addition, his credentials in the black business community are well established. He was Managing Director and President of the Black Management Forum in 1994 and 1995.
Mr Sibiya holds a B Admin degree from the University of Zululand and an MBA from Western Michigan University in the United States of America. His academic qualifications supplemented by his considerable business experience and well developed management profile, will be of great value to the Chamber in all of its strategic and operational activities. I have no doubt that he will be most effective in adding value to the well-structured and successful foundations of Chamber business activity that have so efficiently been laid by Mzolisi Diliza in the era immediately following our country’s transition to democracy.
