Media release issued by the Chamber of Mines on 21 July 2009

Progress made at the gold sector wage negotiations

The gold mining companies engaged in the 2009 gold sector wage negotiations, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold and Rand Uranium, have made further improved offers to the unions. The companies have offered to increase the monthly underground entry-level salaries to R4000 by 1 July 2010. The companies have also offered a 10% increase for lower category employees, while other employees have been offered 9%.

On 1 July 2010 the wages will be improved by the average CPI plus 1%, with a guaranteed increase of 7.5%.

These increments are in addition to other offers already made, including increases in the living out allowance.

“The offers take into account the welfare of the employees within the context of the prevailing operational environment in the gold mining sector”, said Dr Elize Strydom who negotiates on behalf of the gold mining companies. “We are confident that the unions will consider these offers favourably”.
