Chamber of Mines collieries make a final salary offer

The Collieries members of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa have made a final salary offer to the unions (National Union of Mineworkers, Solidarity and UASA).

The offer for Anglo Coal, Xstrata, Exxaro, Delmas Coal and Kangra is to increase the salaries of miners, artisans and officials by 9%. For all other employees the offer was 10%, except for the entry level salaries, which will be increased to R3713 per month. The living out allowance paid to employees will be increased by the same percentage as the salary increase.

Optimum and Siyanda collieries do not have different categories of employees, and their employees have been offered an increase of 9.5%. Springlake has offered between 9.5% and 10% for the lower category employees, whilst their Miners, Artisans and Officials have been offered 9%.

On 1 July 2010 the offer is to improve the salaries by the average CPI plus 1%, with a guaranteed increase of 7.5%.

Commenting on the offers made, Dr Frans Barker, who negotiates for the Coal companies, said he was happy with progress made in the negotiations, and that both employers and unions had attempted to approach the negotiations in a constructive manner. “The employers have made the best final offers they could within the constraints of their individual operational circumstances. We are confident that the unions will consider these offers favourably”, said Dr Barker.
