Media release issued by the Chamber of Mines on 2 February 2009

Chamber of Mines Collieries make a conditional wage increment offer in the 2009 wage negotiations

The Collieries members of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa today made conditional wage offers of 9% for lower category employees, and 8% for Miners, Artisans and Officials during today’s wage negotiations for the coal mining sector. Optimum and Siyanda collieries made a single offer of 8.5%.

The offers were made conditional on the unions accepting the Chamber’s offers regarding the other demands with high cost implications.

“We have made very good offers and we are optimistic that these offers will lead us to agreement on the 2009 wage review without having to involve outside facilitation”, said Dr Frans Barker, who negotiates for the Coal companies.

The unions have indicated that they will respond to the Chamber’s offers on Thursday, 30 June 2009.
