Comments by the Chamber of Mines following the budget speech by the Minister of Mineral Resources
The Chamber of Mines of South Africa noted with interest the remarks made by the Minister of Mineral Resources, Ms Susan Shabangu in her Maiden Budget Vote speech to parliament today.
Commenting on the Minister’s remarks, the Chief Executive of the Chamber of Mines, Mr Mzolisi Diliza, expressed his appreciation on the tone of the Minister’s speech with its strong focus on the cooperation of all stakeholders in addressing the challenges facing the mining industry in these difficult times.
“We are grateful that Minister Shabangu acknowledges the important role that the mining industry continues to play in this country and the need to ensure that we address both the short and long term challenges facing the industry to ensure that we emerge as a stronger industry when the world economy recovers from the current downturn. The Chamber of Mines remains committed to play its role in employment creation and addressing the other challenges the Minister has referred to, including the shortage of skills in the mining industry”, said Mr Diliza.
