The Chamber of Mines of South Africa welcomes comments by the Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel in his 2009 budget speech

The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Mines, Mr Zoli Diliza, expressed relief at the approach taken by the Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel in his budget speech delivered today.  Mr Diliza expressed appreciation for the boldness, innovation and creativity shown by the Minister in his speech which did not only address issues around the current global financial crisis but also displayed admirable foresighted and vision for the future.

“We are also delighted by the recognition by Mr Manuel of the contribution made by the mining industry not only in the economy, but also in the industry’s “creativity and commitment to improve conditions for mining communities. The Chamber of Mines and the NUM have already agreed that they fully support an integrated development body for the industry. It is hoped that outstanding issues will be finalized by the Chamber of Mines, the Department of Minerals and Energy and organized labour in the foreseeable future, which will enable the body to be established before the end of the year”, said Mr Diliza. He said the Chamber of Mines was especially grateful for the deferment of the mining royalties regime from this year to 2010. He said this singular act will not only provide relief to the mining industry but goes a long way to addressing some of the challenges the industry, labour and government have been grappling with within the Mining Industry Growth, Development and Employement Task Team to not only confront current challenges to the industry but to ensure that the mining industry emerges from the current crisis stronger and able to take advantage of more favourable conditions in future in a sustainable manner.

Mr Diliza also welcomed the Minister’s innovative and holistic approach which also focused on the fundamentals including disbursements aimed at building capacity by encouraging investment in power generation, transport networks and telecommunications all of which are critical to the mining industry.
