Chamber of Mines congratulates those involved in rescue efforts in Chile
The Acting Chief Executive of the Chamber of Mines, Mr Peter Bunkell, today expressed relief and delight at progress made in rescuing the Chilean miners who had been trapped underground following the collapse of exit points over two months ago.
“We have been watching the situation unfolding in Chile from the beginning and have been praying that no untoward harm befalls the trapped miners. While we have been encouraged by the ingenuity of those responsible for the rescue operation, we are delighted today to be able to congratulate them on their efforts and are happy that the miners are finally being reunited with their loved ones. Sixty nine days is a very long time underground and rescue operations of this nature poses serious technical challenges which are further complicated by the emotions of the rescuers and those being rescued. We would also like to congratulate the miners and their loved ones for their fortitude during this time. We understand all too well the anxiety they endured”, said Mr Bunkell.
Mr Bunkell further complimented Murray and Roberts, a member of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, for the part they played in this rescue operation.
