South African gold production for the third quarter of 2009

Third Quarter 2009 Gold Production

In the third quarter of 2009, South Africa’s gold production increased by 4.8% to 54 110.9 kilograms when compared to the 51 634.4 kilograms produced in the second quarter. On a year-on-year basis gold production was down by 2.9% in the third quarter of 2009.

Chamber Member Gold Production

For gold mines members of the Chamber, production rose by 3.4% to 44 140.9 kilograms in the third quarter of 2009 when compared to the previous quarter.  The 4.4% rise in the average grade to 3.34 grams per ton assisted production to rise. On a year-on-year basis Chamber member production fell by 3.9% in the third quarter of 2009, as lower grades more than offset higher milled tonnages.
