South African gold production for the second quarter of 2009 and revision to the 2008 production data
Second Quarter 2009 Gold Production
In the second quarter of 2009, South Africa’s gold production increased by 0.4% to 51 634 kilograms when compared to the 51 411 kilograms produced in the first quarter. However, on a year-on-year basis the gold production was down a substantial 9.3% in the second quarter of 2009. This is despite the lower base of production in the first half of 2008, which had been materially affected by the domestic electricity supply crisis.
Chamber Member Gold Production
For gold mines members of the Chamber, production rose by 4.8% to 42 675 kilograms in the second quarter of 2009 when compared to the previous quarter. The 5.6% decline in average grade to 3.2 grams per ton was insufficiently offset by the slight rise in tons milled. On a year-on-year basis Chamber member production fell by 9.8% in the second quarter of 2009, as lower grades more than offside higher milled tonnages.
Revision to the 2008 and 2009 Gold Production data
Based on upgraded information, the Chamber is revising production numbers for the last quarter of 2008, for 2008 as a whole and for the first quarter of 2009 as per the following table:
